Don't Hire an Interior Designer to Copy Social Media

In the age of digital inspiration, social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have become a treasure trove of interior design ideas, with countless boards and images showcasing stunning rooms and impeccable aesthetics.

While it's undeniable that these platforms are a valuable resource for sparking creativity, there's a growing concern that hiring an interior designer solely to replicate Pinterest-perfect spaces might limit the true potential of your home (and the designer’s creativity). Let’s explore the reasons why people shouldn't hire an interior designer to copy what they see on social media and instead encourage a more personalized and authentic approach to home design.

1.   Lack of Personalization

One of the key drawbacks of replicating Pinterest or Instagram designs is the lack of personalization. Your home should reflect YOUR personality, preferences, and lifestyle. While Pinterest and other platforms can provide inspiration, a skilled interior designer can help you infuse these ideas with your unique identity, creating a space that resonates with you on a deeper level, not just to have an identical space that someone else already has (yawn).

2.   Cookie-Cutter Design

Design trends on social media can spread like wildfire, resulting in a surge of similar-looking interiors. Hiring a professional interior designer solely to replicate these trends may lead to a cookie-cutter design that lacks the originality and character that make a home truly special.

This reminds me of the track homes we tend to see in newer subdivisions. All of the homes look exactly the same with the exception of a small variation on colors. There’s no uniqueness or character to the neighborhood. The same concept goes for your home. Do you want it to look like everyone else’s or do you want it to look like you?

Break away from the mold and embrace a design that is uniquely yours. Don’t be scared to get out of your comfort zone and do something different. Looking like everyone else is basic and boring.

3.   Overlooking Functionality

Social media images often prioritize aesthetics over functionality. When hiring an interior designer, it's essential to consider not only the visual appeal but also the practicality of the design. Remember, what you see online is in someone else’s house, with different lighting, different architectural details, different layout, etc. What may work for that space, may not or cannot work for yours.

A professional interior designer can balance both aspects, ensuring your space not only looks beautiful but also functions seamlessly for your specific daily needs and how you will use the space.

4.   Investment Concerns

Pinterest and Houzz can sometimes showcase aspirational designs that may not align with your level of investment for the space. By engaging an interior designer to replicate such designs, you may find yourself overspending without considering more affordable alternatives that could achieve a similar effect. A skilled designer can work within your investment level, suggesting cost-effective solutions that don't compromise on style.

5.   Missing Out on Creativity

Design is an art form, and your home is the canvas. Replicating other designs you see on social media may stifle the creative process, limiting the opportunity for experimentation and innovation. A talented interior designer can bring fresh perspectives to the table, pushing boundaries and crafting a space that goes beyond the confines of popular trends. Trust the designer and their process, not what someone else has already done.

Also, be aware of AI-generated images. We are living in the times where artificial intelligence is invading virtually every industry, especially interior design. While AI can be a great tool for homeowners and interior designers, don’t allow it to take over a human being’s creative abilities. Check out our blog post for more information about AI here.

In fact, I would be very skeptical of an interior designer that is willing to copy what has already been done. Either they have no confidence in their abilities to create a unique design or they want an easy payday…one where they don’t have to actually think, plan, and put together an amazing design for their clients. If you see that, ruuuuuun!

While Pinterest, Instagram or Houzz are excellent sources of inspiration, it should be viewed as a starting point rather than a destination for your interior design journey. Hiring an interior designer offers the chance to transform your space into a unique, personalized home that goes beyond the confines of digital trends (yawn).

Please don’t restrict your designer to a boring box that will ultimately choke the both of you! Allow them the creative freedom to craft a space that is uniquely you, showcasing what you love and brings you joy. Don’t be lazy and do what everyone else is doing.

Do not waste your time or your designer’s time copying what’s already out there. Embrace the opportunity to collaborate with a professional who can help you discover and express your own distinct style, ensuring that your home is a true reflection of you.
