New Year, New Trends: 2020 Interior Design Trends I'm Loving
Pinterest, design articles, design blogs, and so on and so forth. There seems to be what feels like a million interior design and decorating trends we should be watching out for in 2020 but I’m not going to bore you with all of them because I’m cool like that. You’re welcome.
What I am going to do is share some of the ones I’m particularly drawn to and really excited about! Five of them to be exact. You may agree or not agree…that’s totally okay. I mean, we’re all entitled to our opinion, right? I’m not writing about the law of gravity (sorry to disappoint), I’m simply giving my professional opinion as a designer daaahling.
So, put on your big girl panties (or big boy boxer briefs) and don’t get all uptight about this. Just grab a cup of coffee, wine, or whatever your vice is and relax. Don’t take yourself so seriously! Enjoy this little bit of time you have and who knows, you just might get inspired to redesign your own space for the new year. Let’s go!
1. Holistic design
With the hectic hustle and bustle of life, kids, spouses, significant others, bills, work and the self-induced anxiety caused by the anticipation of season 4 of Stranger Things, more and more we see people wanting that quiet respite away from the world.
Where do they go in attempt to achieve this? Probably a luxury vacation somewhere in the Caribbean.
But for most of us who aren’t able to hop on a plane and jet set around the world, that hope of tranquility is H-O-M-E.
A place where people want to create that peaceful, harmonious sanctuary. We’ll see well- thought-out spaces that create mindful living. Warm, soothing colors, texture, and functionality that reflect nature and establish a spa-like surrounding.
Wellness of the spirit, mind, and body is key. People will strive for more simplicity and stillness. Mmmmm…I can feel it right now…
2. 3D wall coverings
A super cool way to cover your walls is with 3D wall panels. They've been around for a little while but seem to be gaining momentum. Interior spaces in 2020 will showcase texture on walls with unique designs, colors, and patterns.
Wallpaper is not the only option love! What’s awesome is that if you’re a DIYer, you can install these babies yourself.
3. Bringing the outdoors in
Bringing nature into your abode is closely related to holistic design. But even if you don’t want your home to be completely Zen, nature can be infused into a space in smaller doses.
Even though this was a trend we saw in 2019, we’ll see more oversized indoor plants as part of the design.
Botanical wall art is another way to pay homage to Mother Nature. It’s a really beautiful and unique way to incorporate greenery into a room.
If that’s a little too bold for your taste, terrariums are a great option for that nature-inspired look.
Calm, serene, and the feeling of becoming one with the outdoors is the objective here.
4. Metals
Using metals in design is nothing new; however, in 2020 I think we’ll see more of it. It’s not just for hardware in the bathroom or kitchen. It’s blended into furniture and can become a piece of art by itself.
Mixing metals will become more and more common. People won’t feel as if they have to be so matchy-matchy. Gold and silver seem to be a match made in metal heaven.
Chrome and silver will start to give antique brass and gold a run for their money. There’s so many possibilities and homes will begin to reflect them.
5. Curves/circular design
When it comes to interior design, a lot of us tend to think of curves and waves as more of a contemporary style. But in reality, it can be mixed in with other styles as well.
Curves and circular designs soften spaces. Interiors that have a lot of hard lines and rectangular shapes can sometimes feel rigid. Adding some curves to the space can really ease that harsh feeling.
I think we’ll see a lot more use of curvy sofas and chairs along with round tables and wavy wall art designs.
Oh and never forget the lighting! Circular lighting has already made its mark but will continue on into the new decade.
Okay. Question. What do you think is the coolest thing about trends? Answer: you don’t have to use them all. Yup. Just use what speaks to you and what you absolutely love. Take what you like and tweak it to make it fit your space and personality.
Just because everyone else seems to be doing it, doesn’t mean you have to jump on the bandwagon. In fact, I challenge you not to. Be different! Believe it or not, there are some trends that can linger for a while. It’s not just 15 minutes of fame for all of them.
So, tell me…did you like any of the 2020 interior design trends that I love? If so, what’s your fave?
If none of these float your boat, which ones are you excited about? Come on, you can be honest. There’s no right or wrong answer. Be your own trendsetter and love what you love.
